Norfolk, VA - PAC and Philadelphia-Whitemarsh made the long trip to Norfolk, VA just to play some rugby without worry about the snow and unusually cold DC weather. As it turned out, the weather cooperated fully - perfect for rugby, partly sunny and 50+ degrees. The game started positive for PAC. While Philly grabbed possesion, PAC was showing a strong attacking defense. The defense was able to keep the game inside P-W's 40 meter line. This also put the PW team under sustained pressure. Unfortunately, PAC eventually relented, and eventually Philly spun a long meter rolling maul from a lineout on the PAC side of 50. From the maul, former Eagle prop George Shucker broke free down the side line for the first score of the day (Conversion missed, PAC 0 - P-W 5.)
2 minutes later, a penalty against PAC inside the 30 meter line allowed P-W to add 3 more points to the score, PAC 0 -P-W 8. PAC came fighting back and took control of the game. PAC's defense after the kick-off was once again unyielding and was able to push the Philly offense backwards. Which eventually caused a turnover inside P-W 25 meter line. After a Philly offense a the breakdown, Flyhalf Dave Burt stepped up and slotted a 25 meter penalty kick (PAC 3 - P-W 8, 25mins)
Both teams traded possesion and kept the pressure on. PAC broke first, allowing P-W to dis-figure the PAC defense and exploit an overload for a second try at 29 minutes. (unconverted, PAC 3 - P-W 13) Greg "Kato" McLaughlin entered the game just after this score and minutes later "Kato" was diving over for PAC's first try of the match and the last score of the half. Following a P-W offsides, scrumhalf Tom Kenny took the quick tap and passed it to a hard crashing Kato for the 5-pointer. (Conversion missed, PAC 8 - PW 13, 35mins).
The first half seemed to be brewing quite a contest. The second half started a bit slow for both teams, play got sloppy leading to penalties, missed passes and messy play. But at the 15 minute mark P-W put together several phases and found itself in the try zone for another 5 pints (converted, PAC 8 - P-W 20). The game continued with P-W playing controlled attacking phase rugby. PAC never regained momemtum and added several poor penalties to ensure Philly stayed on the attack. At the 80-minute mark, P-W scored a try off a line out play the made the final score PAC 8 - P-W 25.
The Bottom Line Man of the Match was Jason Powell. Though in a losing effort, Jason made countless tackles and worked at the breakdowns. He also made strong attacking decisions that kept PAC moving forward. This along with his hard work in the line outs made him the standout in a losing effort.
B-side follows with second losing performance
The B game was a lot like the A game. The B's played decent defense, but allowed Philly to get on the board quickly with a blown tackle at midfield, which led to a long try. Following the ensuing kickoff, PAC conceded a penalty just outside their own 22 which Whitemarsh converted (PW 8-0 PAC). PAC answered back with steadily attacking defense, which failed to steal possesion but which pushed Whitemarsh backwards all day. While Whitemarsh couldn't make the gainline, PAC couldn't seem to retain the ball. About 20 minutes in, Whitemarsh conceded a penalty at a ruck inside their own 22, which led to a try on forwards crash ball. The rest of the game was characterized by an uninspired performance in the forwards while the backs dug in thier heels, but were to often overwhelmed by thier opposition.
Perhaps two bright spots appeared in this game.. front rower Brendan "Bubba" Carey and #9 Jeff Bell. Bubba showed what a strong off-season committment can do for your game...an anchor in the scrums, Bubba aslo got around an managed to run the ball well and work at the breakdowns. Meanwhile, Jeff did a great job of playing defense and dug the ball out of many messy breakdowns. He pushed the forwards well, getting everything out of them that they had to commit. For his work at the pivot, Jeff earns the Bottom Line Man of the Match.
