OMBAC OUTLASTS PAC
2-May-2004 San Diego, CA - After a long night of travel, and decimated by missing personnel PAC struggled during this match, especially in the set pieces. Meanwhile, the OMBAC backrow were effective attacking and over all OMBAC had the majority of the possession on the day. PAC went up early, but let control slip away, yielding the lead to OMBAC. Though PAC mounted a late comeback to snag a critical bonus point, it was too little too late final score OMBAC 36-24 PAC.

From the opening kickoff OMBAC applied strong pressure. The Cali boys immediately begin working good multi-phase rugby from a lineout win and then camped in the PAC 22 for the first 10 minutes. Though the PAC defense seemed like it would hold, eventually the OMBAC forwards found a hole when imported #8 Shawn Renwick crashed over from a few meters out, OMBAC 5-0 PAC. Following this "wake-up" try PAC went on the offensive for the next 20 minutes of the period.

PAC displayed a little ball control offense of their own and stunned the San Diego crowd with two quick tries. The first developed from a nice piece of running by fullback Dave Burt. After taking a short pass from flyhalf Fabling Burt slipped right through the centers and then outpaced the covering fullback to the line. The second try came on the hands of winger Ivan Hardnett who crashed through from 5 yards out after the forwards had slugged it out in a multi-ruck dogfight. Both tries were converted by Burt, PAC slipped ahead to 14-5 and had seemingly found thier legs.

Meanwhile, OMBAC was looking to find the form they had lost after the first 10 minutes. And they did find thier form, gaining good field position with the wind and eventually driving a lineout over (PAC 14-12). Renwick added his second of the day, finding his way through from the back of a 7 meter scrum down. (OMBAc 17-14 PAC). IT seemd PAC was prepared ot respond at the half, but the clock ran out on the first period with with PAC knocking on the door.

The travel and the the missing stalwarts caught up with PAC in the second half. Wilting under the OMBAC pressure, the Reds yeilded three tries in the next twenty minutes, putting the match at a long reach by the 60th minute, 36-14. However, with playoff urgency PAC fought back in the last 20 and nabbed two deserved tries. The first was the standard Mark Crick pick and go from close range at 70mins. Then prop Jesse LaPierre added the 4th PAC try, at full time.

The try secured PAC a critical bonus point from the match. Both tries went unconverted, final score OMBAC 36-24 PAC.
