3-Apr-04, Boston, MA - PAC overcame a late start and a tough Boston squad to nab a 31-1 victory. After a delay in kickoff due to flooding from a week of strong rain, the match finally started under cloudy skies, damp air and breezy conditions. PAC kicked-off with suprisingly good conditions underfoot.
Early stages a little tentative by both sides with PAC controlling the territorial battle. Ten minutes into the game the scoreless tie was broken. PAC flanker Randy Stephens hurried the Boston scrumhalf at a lineout and forces a scramble. Stephens picks-off of a loose pass from the Boston halfback and then outpaces two Boston defenders on a 40 yd ramble down the left touchline for a try. (conversion Burt, PAC 7 - 0 BOS)
PAC continues to force the play and settled into a good rhythym, maintaining possession and hammering at the Boston forwards in close quarters. Ominously, as in the last two weeks, points prove hard to come by for the DC side. At 15 minutes Boston takes away a penalty goal (Trenouth) after making a foray into PAC territory, bringing the score to 7-3. It looked to be a tight contest in the making, with multiple driving mauls from both sides gaining significant territory, followed by turnovers from knock-ons or errant passes in the difficult weather conditions.
Finally, PAC really got their forwards into the offense - using repeated crashes off the edges of the rucks or mauls. Boston attempted to play a territory game, but this was countered by good returns from PAC outside backs. The gradual loss of territory combined with PAC forward pressure finally cost Boston. After the teams exchanged unsuccessful penalty kicks, PAC fullback Dave Burt finally slotted one, loosening the score to PAC 10-3 Boston. Then right on halftime, after good leadup work by both backs and forwards, PAC hooker Mark Crick squeaked over from a ruck at the 1 yd line (conversion Burt). Halftime score 17-3.
Following the half Boston enjoyed it's most productive period of the game. For 20 minutes they camped in the PAC 22 but were unable to breach the line. Solid defense and Boston miscues combined to preserve the 14 point margin for the Potomac squad. In the last 15 minutes of the game, having absorbed all that Boston could bring, PAC worked their way back to more favorable territory. The score was cracked open when center Greg McLaughlin sent linemate Arron Cowie through a hole with a well timed pass and Cowie finished easily from 20 yards out. (conversion Burt, PAC 24-3 BOS). Using the continued pressure of a multi-pronged attack, PAC was able to grab a critical 4th try. After multiple phases inside the Boston 20 meter line Stephens bulldozed over for his second try, again converted by Burt. Final score 31-3.
Overall, this game saw PAC get ontrack - a good work rate in the forward combined with scoring touch in the backline. Mark Crick, Randy Stephens and JC Rocha stood out among the forwards, particularly with the ball in hand. The backs played very good defense, with Greg "Kato" McLaughlin looking particularly in his first Super League appearance. The day also marked the return of fullback Dave Burt's scoring touch with the boot. Greg McLaughlin and Randy Stephens earned the Bottom Line/Captain Morgan Man of the Match awards.
