Bladensburg, MD - (20-Sep-03) - Thanks to hurricane Izzy, the PAC A and B matches scheduled against Baltimore-Chesapeake were postponed (TBD). But the hurricane did not prevent the thirds from playing USUHS at Colmar Manor Park in Bladensburg, MD.
Upon receiving the kick off, PAC immediately went on attack. The forwards took the ball up field and exposed a large opening behind the USUHS backs. As the play advanced towards the opening the ball was passed out to the backs and out of nowhere a USUHS player stepped in and picked it off for 70-meter dash for a try. (unconverted, PAC 0 - USUHS 5)
It was a sudden try and one of the few positive moments for a rebuilding USHUS program. PAC’s forwards took the kick off on the fall and stormed into the USUHS forwards and right through to their backs. Scrumhalf Jeff Bell kept the movement going and after multiple phases dotted down for the first PAC try of the day (converted - Martinez, PAC 7 - USUHS 5). PAC was in the lead for the day.
The remaining part of the half was a rerun of the first try that PAC attained. The referee invoked unopposed scrums and USUHS was not in a position to control the PAC forwards led by Brendan McManus, Brendan "Bubba" Carey, Pete Sickle, Bill "Norm Barnett and a host of others.
In the back line, caption Cory Rosensteel was playing flyhalf, Martin Gurria and Stefan Hankin at the centers, Tom Gilgun and Martinez playing deep. Norm posted his first try of his career along with 5 others who dotted down for 5 points. The first half score closed PAC 48 UHUHS 5.
The second half was a continuation of the first, the PAC forwards demonstrating possession rugby with emphasis on solid mauling. The end result was scoring an additional 64 second half points. Leading the second half were the Bottom Line men of the match Brendan McManus, Bubba, and Pete Walton. See you Tuesday night at the Bottom Line. Final score was PAC 112 – USUHS 5.
