Newsline 11.30.07: Leaving Party, Updates

Chino's Leaving Party

This Saturday at the Line

Some of you may know Roberto (Chino); he has decided that the US has too much competition for him so he is returning to Chile where he can be a rugby god. In honor of this event we are having a keg at the Bottom line tomorrow starting around 10PM. Please fee free to stop by, if not to say good luck, just to drink some free beer and enjoy the drink specials. If you come just for the free beer, remember to smile in his direction he speaks very little English anyway so he will not know the difference.

Alone It Stands, November 15-December 15

Debuts at the Theatre on the Run in Arlington

The American premier of Alone It Stands, a two-act comedy written by Irish playwright John Breen, debuts at the Theatre on the Run in Arlington this month.

Supporters of the local rugby community are involved in the direction and promotion of this play. Please forward this information to your club membership and anyone else passionate about the game.

Alone It Stands tells the tale of Munster Rugby Team's legendary victory over New Zealand's mighty All Blacks in Thomond Park, Limerick, in 1978. In the play, six actors play 62 roles, including the Munster team, the Kiwis, the two coaches, the ref, the crowd, the press, a pregnant woman, several children and a dog. Breen's hysterical, high-energy play has been a staple in theatres across Ireland for almost a decade.

Ed (PAC therapist) & Winnie are pleased to announce a new addition to our family; Natalie Au, who was born on October 24, 2007 (Scorpio, year of the Golden Pig) at 10:43pm at Shady Grove Hospital, Maryland. She weighed about 7 lbs, 8 oz. and was ~21" long.

Everyone is now home from the hospital and learning each others' crazy schedules...we hope to introduce her to you all in person soon!

Cheers, Ed

P.S. Ed also just got selected to the medical team for the 2008 Beijing Paralympics.

P.P.S. Ed's 'other' home club; the Toronto/Aurora Barbarians RFC (member for 14 years) just captured the League & Cup Title this past Saturday in the McCormick Cup Final; http://www.rugbycanada.ca/index.php? page_id=10&lang=en&news_id=3593

US Military Rugby Reunion - Fort Lauderdale

Thurs 21 Feb 2008 thru Mon 25 Feb 2008

Jack McGonagle is organizing a "US Military Rugby Reunion", and we are planning to meet in Fort Lauderdale during the time period of the Fort Lauderdale Ruggerfest.

Ruggerfest is the 23/24 of Feb.... the reunion date is Thurs 21st to Mon 25th.

The focus of the reunion is for anyone who played or has an association with military rugby. (NOT just USCS or All Service guys but any of the club players or coaches, too.) The reunion is intended to be a social event but interest will dictate putting in a 35+ or 45+ side.

We've a group hotel thing one of the nice hotels on the beach walkable to the Parrot, so it should be a good event.

Thanks.
Jack McGonagle

MARFU Fundraiser and screening of "Try Revolution"

December 2

Join us for the Mid Atlantic Rugby Football Union's annual fundraising event, featuring the first U.S. screening of the documentary Try Revolution.

When: December 2, 5:00 pm

Where: The Space
903 N Street NW
Washington DC 20001

Try Revolution is the story of the 1981 Springbok Tour of New Zealand, its impact on political events in South Africa, and how the events in South Africa impacted the tour.

The 1981 Springbok Tour of New Zealand was one of the most highly anticipated tournaments by rugby fans worldwide, in particular rugby-mad white South Africans: New Zealand was their biggest rival, and with this tour broadcast live on South African television for the first time, the country was ready for an epic showdown. But when they turned on their televisions for the first match, what they got instead were pictures of mass anti-apartheid demonstrations.

Try Revolution, through interviews with Desmond Tutu, the rugby players themselves, and ordinary South Africans, explores the Tour and the anti-apartheid demonstrations that besieged the matches, and how they aided the struggle against apartheid.

"You really can't even compute its value, it said the world has not forgotten us, we are not alone," Archbishop Desmond Tutu

Produced and directed by Leanne Poole

Afterward will be a replay of the 2000 Tri-Nations match between New Zealand and SA, one of the greatest matches ever played.

BBQ and Cash Bar, Suggested donation: $15.

Proceeds to benefit the MARFU All Stars Leadership Foundation, and to purchase coaching and practice aids for three DC area youth rugby programs.
