PAC COMES BACK TO FINISH NYAC IN LAST MINUTE PAC 33 - NYAC 29 Tanglewood Recreation Center, Clinton MD (5-Apr) - PAC stayed on pace with the division leaders defeating NYAC in a see-saw battle 33-29. NYAC was slayed by a late try to PAC scrumhalf Tom Kenney in the final minutes of the game. PAC decided to forgo the chance at a penalty kick to tie and stole a win. A 5 meter scrum yielded an attacking chance for man of the match Kenney, who slipped through the Winged Foot defenders for the final try. The New Yorkers come away with two bonus points, but once again take a loss in the wanning minutes of the game.
The scoring started in the opening minute when after several phases of attack the NYAC wing found space outside the PAC backline, earning the first 5 pointer of the day. (conversion missed, PAC PAC 0- NYAC 5.) This quieted a shocked home crowd and boosted the NYAC squad. PAC did recover, but failed to find a consistent attacking groove. For the next 20 minutes the match settled into back and forth maneuvering by both squads. At the 24 minute mark, NYAC was called for using their hands on the ground from the 35 meter line, PAC fullback Dave Burt slotted his first kick of the day narrowing the score to PAC 3 - NYAC 5.
On the ensuing kick-off PAC took control of the ball and seemingly the tempo of the game. The big red machine pushed NYAC back inside thier own 22 meter line for several minutes. NYAC withstood the pressure and eventually regained possession after forcing a PAC miscue. Suddenly the PAC surge was turned into a NYAC scoring opportunity. Quickly turning to the attack, NYAC was able to move the ball outside with crisp passing and by breaking several weak tackle attempts. NYAC slipped past the cover defense and dotted down thier second try of the day. (conversion good, PAC 3 - NYAC 12)
From the restart, PAC continued to push back and to attempt to get control of the game. But NYAC again stood strong. And after several possession and field position changes, NYAC was called for another penalty from inside their own half of the field. Again PAC's leading scorer, Dave Burt, punched through another penalty kick from 37 meters. The half closed with the score still standing at PAC 6 - NYAC 12.
The second frame started fast and ended faster. The scoring started early when PAC second row, Jay Keller, put himself in perfect support position and running in the backline finished a 15 meter run with a try (conversion - Burt). PAC was in the lead for the first time of the day at the 42 minute mark in the game, PAC 13 - NYAC 12
NYAC came right back with a series of strong attacks, controlling possession for multiple phases. After several minutes of heated exchange the NYAC backs finally found a seam through thier opposite backline. At 50 minutes into the match, NYAC again crossed the try line following a nice 40 meter attacking run. (Converted, PAC 13 - NYAC 19).
This score finally seemed to stir PAC from a slumber. The DC side went on the attack, and stepped up the defensive efforts. This yeilded a run of scores. Winger Danzel Vanzyl started the scoring with a try at the 58 minute. His effort was followed by another Burt goal kick (60mins) and a third PAC try by inside center Greg McLaughlin at the 65th minute. With 15 minutes remaining PAC had taken a 26 - 19 lead over NYAC.
But true to the style they had shown all day, NYAC was not finished. They came storming right back from the restart and after several phases, good retention skills and some sloppy tackling by PAC, found the try line for a fourth time. (uncoverted, PAC 26 - NYAC 24)
Then, 3 minutes later, at the 71 minute mark NYAC appeared to have grabbed a breath stealing victory. From thirty meters out, the NYAC fullback sliced through PAC defensive line and finished across the line for what seemed to be the winning try. The conversion was missed but NYAC was sitting on top 29-26 with less then 10 minutes to play.
From the kick-off PAC took control of the remaining minutes and the match. PAC pressed the attack, probing, driving, seeking a hole, weak spot, overlooked seam, anything to get through the NYAC defense. Finally, winger VanZyl slipped around the outside of the Winged Foot defense. He lofted a short pop kick from inside the NYAC 20 meter. Before the chase was on, VanZyl was hit late and high, a penalty and yellow card left NYAC on thier goal line facing a PAC lineout at 5 meters one man down. By abandoning the sure foot of Burt, PAC was obviously playing for the win. PAC won the ensuing lineout and surged to the 3 meter line. After several attacking phases NYAC committed a costly penalty to stop the PAC attack at the 2 meter line.
This time PAC captain Mike Fabling took an attacking scrum for his side. The scrum was controlled by PAC and NYAC scrambled to cover the weak side in what appeared to be a huge opening for a back row attack. As NYAC scampered to cover the open territory, scrumhalf Tom Kenney saw a uncovered gap on the strong side at the base of the scrum and slipped in for the game winning try. Burt converted at fulltime. PAC 33 - NYAC 29. Veteran Scrumhalf Tom Kenney earned the nod as the Bottom Line Man of the Match.

Second Side Runs right past Irish B's
A brief glance at the Second Side roster (below) tells it all. The second XV was loaded with experienced and gifted players, including 9 with Super League experience, 12 with A-side experience. Obviously this experience level meant the side was also loaded with the potential for running in many tries against a Div. II club's B side. That potential was realized early and often as the PAC side ran in eleven tries for a 62-0 rout. Within five minutes JC Rocha slammed into paydirt, and Jeff Bell converted. The Irish kicked off, and, following several phases, Brian "Chicken" Olmes crossed the line for the
second try of the match, converted again by Bell. The Irish kicked off again, and after the ball was consolidated, Jesse Turnier sped down the sidelines and centered a try for Bell's conversion. The Irish kicked off again, and Turnier again sped to the end zone, this time leaving Bell a more challenging conversion kick. After ten minutes, the score stood at 26-0.
Thus it continued, with tries by Dalton Hamilton, JC and Paul Foley. Halftime 43-0. The second half provided less excitement as the side seemed simply bored, producing tries by Bill Gaetjen and Al Martinez (2).
The Side simply had its way with over-matched competition -- dominating set pieces, wheeling the Irish scrum at will, while spoiling their line-outs. The backs made nearly everything worked, beginning with Joe Purcell's smashing runs up the middle and ending with good forward work or with the ball played wide. Outside center Mark Cyphers served up ball for the wings and full back, who collected a total of five tries.
On a day when many stood out, Brian Olmes gets the Bottom Line Man-of-the-Match for almost personally ruining the Irish scrummaging.

Third Side Stumbles over Blacksburg Facing a top Div. III side from Blacksburg, the Third Side started strong, lost its cohesion and ethen recovered to fall disappointingly short, 20 - 24. Early forward pressure produced a penalty goal by Dave "Bijou" Kennedy. Shortly thereafter, Bijou scampered across to touch down and then converted his try, for a 10-0 lead, and thinks looked rosy.
However, Blacksburg settled into their own game, which consisted of pounding away with their larger backs. One such attack produced a 60-yard try, 10-5. Faced with the challenge, the thirds continued to attack, but began to leave ball carriers isolated, with the inevitable loss of possession. Enjoying the additional possession, Blacksburg pressed its size advantage which yielded another try before the half. 10-12.
The second half began poorly as Blacksburg struck for another try, 10-17. A possible rout was averted, however, with all credit to FB Diego Arias Caballo, who safely fielded numerous kicks, evaded tacklers and launched counter-attacks. With that safety net, the home side struck back and pressed the pace. Eventually, newcomer Charlie Doutt rocketed home from his flanker position to get his first PAC try. 15-17.
With the match in the balance, both sides attacked, but fell victim to penalties, which snuffed attacking opportunities. Blacksburg again used thier size advantage to force over another try which was converted. 15-24. PAC began to move the ball with more purpose and plan, and Adam "Ice" Eisenberg broke through for a final try, leaving the good guys on the short end of the score. 20-24. In the end, it was Caballo's steady performance in the fullback slot that helped keep PAC in the game, and for those efforts he earns the nod as the Bottom Line Man-of-the-Match.
Worth noting, this match served as a farewell to Dave Kennedy, who has accepted a job in New York. Bijou has been a stalwart since he joined the club from Salisbury University, notably as an integral part of last summer's MARFU Sevens Champions. We will all miss him and his many recountings of his glory days at Salisbury.
