NO OPPONENT? SCRIMMAGE!
Washington DC - PAC hit the pitch this past weekend with what should be its last game before the Super League opener vs Boston. But, don't hold your breath for results. There has been nothing easy, normal, or predictable about this Spring 2003 preseason. And this past Saturday was no exception. The scheduled opponent cancelled on Wednesday. And to make matters worse, the pitches in the DC area were closed due to weather. Most of the other teams in the mid-Atlantic/northeast faced the same scheduling difficulties. However, all will be ready to play SuperLeague rugby this Saturday.
Faced with the possibility of the players not getting the necessary match time needed to be ready for Boston next week, the coaches revived a once strong tradition at PAC. The Blue verses Red game. That's right, the dreaded intra-squad game. The coaches divided the club into two evenly matched teams. With the purpose of placing competing players against each other in a one on one test of ability, fitness, and positional play.
Though late in the season for such a match, it was good work for the entire squad. Both teams were generally working on the same developmental issues of defense, ball possession, and support. The action was furious and fast. The two teams demonstrated vastly improved ball possession skills, while at the same time they demonstrated unyielding support for their mates. This created multiple phase rugby for both sides and a chance for the players to establish the attack style of play that PAC must have this year to be successful. Despite the sharp decrease in forced errors and the development of a more continuous pattern of play, the defense pattern also looked improved from the previous week. Two standouts appeared on the day, each earning Bottom Line Man of the Match recognition - winger (and Eagle trialist) Danzel VanZyl for the blue squad, and Tomas Lionet for the red squad. Join them Tuesday night at the Bottom to help them celebrate the outstanding performance.
