The Potomac Athletic Club Rugby Team (PAC Rugby) of Washington, D.C., a not-for-profit 501 (c)3 organization, is a founding member of the USA RUGBY SUPERLEAGUE, the 16-club national competition for elite American rugby clubs. A perennial in the national club championship playoffs, PAC has established itself as a top ranked premier club in the United States and one of the dominant teams in the North East.
PAC traces its origin to the George Washington and Sudamericano rugby football clubs founded in 1967 and 1969 respectively. In 1988 these two teams merged to form the Potomac Athletic Club. In 1993, a mere 5 years after forming, PAC made their first appearance in the national final four, finishing 3rd. In 1995 PAC returned to the final four and won the USA Men's Division 1 National Championship. PAC remains the only Eastern US team to win this coveted title.
In addition to the Super League, PAC competes in the United States Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union against clubs from the Washington DC/Baltimore/Philadelphia area, as well as against clubs from all over the US - including Atlanta, Chicago, New York City, and Boston. Our lower sides compete in the local division 3. We also periodically tour Europe, the Southern Hemisphere, and the rest of North America.
PAC's players come from all over the United States and other rugby playing countries, among them New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Argentina, South Africa, Ireland, Australia, France, Canada, and Uruguay. Ourplayers have played on the US National team as well as territorial and local union select sides. Many of our old boys remain committed to rugby and continue to participate as coaches, referees and adminstrators.
The club currently fields three sides and occasionally an old boys team. Although experienced players make up most of the club, players of various ages and ability levels play for us. Temporary visitors (students, tourists, etc.) to the Washington, D.C. area are welcome at PAC and are encouraged to play. Contact us whenever you are in town.>
The watering hole and post-game clubhouse of PAC is the Bottom Line in Washington, D.C., located at 1716 "Eye" Street, N.W. (between 17th and 18th Streets near the Farragut West Metro Subway Station, just two blocks from the White House). A well known night spot, the Bottom Line is the social hub of the Washington rugby community. In addition to Saturday post game socials, and special events, Thursday night after 8:30 PM is regular gathering time for the club at the Bottom Line. Stop by and see us.
Again, we are always looking for new players.
